Molly
As luck would have it, the first time I had the privilege of doing an educational demonstration at the Southern Highland Craft Guild Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC; there was a hurricane. It made for a very wet weekend. Some sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway were closed. And, there was a small leak in the roof of the Folk Art Center, complete with water dripping down to the floor about a foot in front of my tables. Thankfully, Hurricane Nicole, is not a storm many in the area remember..
Molly was the piece I was showcasing during that demo day. I was using her to show to the Folk Art Center visitors some of the techniques I use to make my birds. (Please visit my Events page to see when I’ll next be doing a demonstration at the center.)
At the time, she was un-named and had beak that absolutely didn’t match her personality. After that wet weekend, what could she be but a duck or a goose?
With a proper bill and a new name, Molly became my first Anatidae – the scientific name for the biological family of water birds that includes ducks, geese and swans.
Molly’s bill is hand embroidered with a needle felted tongue. Her eyes are made with a button center and the outer beads were reclaimed from an old necklace.
