Shadow

As you might know, I live in the Western North Carolina mountains. Each fall; before the trees enjoy their winter’s rest, they put on a stunning display of bright yellows, oranges and reds. People come from all over the world to gaze upon the magical sight. But, as the trees awake from their slumber each spring; they put on a show that is every bit as breathtaking. It is a bit more subtle though, in that you’ll find primarily one color – green. Just imagine, each spring when those same trees bud and begin the entire cycle anew. As each species puts out that year’s new growth, the display of what seems like every possible shade of green blankets the mountains and valleys. If you’ve never been here in the spring; it’s well worth the trip.

When I began working on Forest, I wanted to him to be a bit more grounded and “Earthy.” It began by having him sit; rather than stand. And, his beak was designed to be reminiscent of tree bark covered in bright green mosses and lichen. It was made using several shades of dyed green wool roving that was needle felted onto the beak that was then hand-embroidered to add the ‘bark’ and add some stability to the felted surface.

While they weren’t made to be a pair, Forest and Juniper could easily be displayed as a pair.

Like all of my sculptures, Forest is made with re-homed, recycled and new materials. All in limited quantities, all not to be used together again. Forest is smaller than most of my other sculptures and will happily sit where ever you place him.
