Maya was one of those birds who took a bit longer to get right. She was unhappy and I was unhappy until we added her beautiful upright comb and her tail. She went from just one of the flock to our fabulous resident chicken. But even then, it wasn’t until I added her luscious eyelashes that we knew she was done. Her eyelashes were made with linen fabric where I pulled threads to leave the threads only going in one direction. I then dyed them with ink and used glue to “starch” them into stiff, upright lashes. Once put in place Maya truly began to embrace her inner diva.

Maya’s name stems from her color scheme. I wanted something bright and that fit with her free-spirited tropical personality. In Latin, the name Maya is related to the word for “Large” and the Romans linked the name to the month of May and made her their goddess of Spring.

Oh how appropriate her name turned out to be. In the spring of 2025, Maya was selected for ArtScape Hendersonville. ArtScape is an annual, juried event where the work of 40 area artists is displayed on large banners throughout our historic downtown district to be enjoyed by both tourists and locals. Maya is currently strutting her stuff at the Art League of Henderson County’s beautiful new gallery on Grove Street where she is currently available for sale.

When I last checked on May 16th, the brochures weren’t out yet, but, when they are, you can see where Maya has been placed and how much she’s enjoying looking down on everyone below. Her banner will remain on display until May of 2026.
